Townsville's New Downtown VR Showcase Draws Crowds This WeekUpdated

Townsville's first dedicated VR film showcase launched on Monday at the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery on Flinders Street with eight short works running through 18 July.

The timing aligns with school holidays and the national rollout of new headsets that dropped in price to $420 last month, pushing families and students toward indoor cultural options when temperatures hit 28 degrees on the Strand.

Organisers report 1,240 advance tickets sold in the first four days, a figure that already exceeds the entire run of last year's digital art pop-up at the same venue.

Two venues drive the buzz

The Perc Tucker Regional Gallery pairs the VR pieces with a free lobby display of local photography taken along Ross River, while the nearby Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre on Entertainment Drive has added three evening sessions of a related 360-degree documentary on Magnetic Island wildlife.

Both sites sit within a five-minute walk of Flinders Street Mall, letting visitors combine the events with dinner at the row of restaurants that extended outdoor seating this winter.

City records show the mall recorded 47,000 pedestrian movements in the week ending 10 July, up 12 percent from the same period in 2025.

Tickets and next steps

Sessions at the gallery run every 45 minutes from 10am to 8pm and cost $22 for adults or $15 for concession holders, with same-day tickets still available at the door.

Anyone planning to attend should book online before Friday, when the final block of 600 slots goes on sale and the convention centre adds a sold-out family matinee on Saturday 13 July.
