Townsville Completes Strand Boardwalk Upgrade, Transforms Evening RoutinesUpdated

The Strand boardwalk extensions opened to the public on July 5 after council crews completed the final lighting and seating installations along a 400-metre stretch between Gregory Street and the Rockpool.

The timing aligns with cooler winter evenings that now stretch past 7 pm, giving workers finishing shifts at the CBD offices a direct route for a walk or quick meal without driving to Magnetic Island or out to Riverway.

Two precincts seeing the biggest shift

At the southern end near The Strand cafe strip, operators report tables booked out by 6 pm on weeknights, while the northern section links directly to the Townsville City Library’s new outdoor reading lawn that opened the same week. Both spots sit within the same 1.2-kilometre loop that locals now complete in under 25 minutes.

Council data released on July 10 shows pedestrian counts along the Strand rose 38 percent in the first five days compared with the same period last year, with the busiest hour recorded between 5:30 pm and 6:30 pm.

What to expect on a first visit

The new vendor zone operates Thursday to Sunday from 4 pm, with average spend on a coffee and snack listed at $11.50. Streetlights stay on until midnight and the path remains fully lit, removing the earlier concern about walking back to parked cars after dark.

Locals planning an evening out can start at the Rockpool car park, walk the full loop and finish with a seat at one of the new picnic tables opposite the library by 8 pm before heading home.
