Townsville's Strand Transforms: New Fitness Programs and Markets Replace Single EventsUpdated

The Strand in Townsville now runs three structured activity sessions each weekend, up from one in 2024, after Townsville City Council approved extended permits for pop-up yoga, cycling clinics and produce stalls between Gregory Street and the Rockpool.

Residents report the change stems from rising demand for low-cost outdoor options as indoor gym memberships climbed past $45 a week at several central facilities. Warmer winter mornings this July have drawn families who previously stayed indoors, pushing organisers to add evening sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

New hubs anchor the changes

Two fixed points drive the shift. The former kiosk site near The Strand Jetty now hosts a rotating schedule run by the Townsville Community Wellness Network, while the open lawn opposite the Breakwater Marina accommodates the weekly Riverside Produce Exchange that started in March 2025. Both sites sit within a 400-metre stretch, letting participants move between sessions without driving.

Council records show 1,872 people registered for the combined programs in the first six months of 2026, a 31 per cent rise on the same period last year. Stall fees at the produce exchange stand at $28 per Saturday for local growers, with the revenue covering security and waste services.

Practical steps for residents

People wanting to join can check the Townsville City Council website for the updated timetable released each Monday. Early sessions start at 6:30am near the Rockpool, with later market trading running until 2pm. Parking remains free along The Strand for the first two hours before paid zones begin at 8am on weekends.
