The Townsville City Council has finalised its allocation of state flood recovery funds, sending the largest share to Ross River Dam safety upgrades and access road repairs near the RAAF base while several inner-north streets remain on a waiting list for drainage work.

This decision arrives after the 2026 state budget papers confirmed additional recovery payments to north Queensland councils, at a time when the Bureau of Meteorology has flagged another wet season with elevated flood risk for the Ross River catchment.

Who receives the first round of works

Residents in the Douglas and Murray areas will see contractors begin dam wall reinforcement and levee inspections within months, work that the council says will reduce overflow risk for properties downstream during heavy rain. Households along University Road gain from new culvert replacements that are listed for completion before the 2027 wet season.

By contrast, some rental properties in South Townsville and West End used by Pacific Island families have no funded drainage or roof-repair component in the current round, leaving those tenants to rely on private insurance or state emergency grants that require individual applications.

Next steps for remaining projects

The council will open a second-round application process for community groups in August, with decisions expected by October. Local advocates note that groups without paid grant writers may find it harder to meet the documentation requirements set out in the funding guidelines.

Rate notices issued in July will include a one-line statement listing the funded projects, allowing residents to track whether their street appears on the schedule or remains unfunded until future budgets.
